is an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of
one, Kamekawa Seisho, who was killed on the 12th instant by a
shot fired from one of the batteries at the eastern entrance
to the harbour, If your Worship pleases I propose to deal la-
ter on with the few points of law which will be raised by the evidence, and propose now merely to state what are the facts and then call the witnesses.
Before I do so, I wish to express the general regret and grief that the action which the forces guarding this Colony found themselves, after full and repeated warnings, obliged to take, has resulted in the destruction of human life, and eo- pecially of that of the subject of a nation with whom we a?o
